Console Wars: Why So Serious?

Nintendo. Sony. Microsoft. These are the current three giants in the video game industry. Not only that, but the industry has developed to the extent of people becoming loyalists to one of the three, while discriminating against those that prefer the different alternative. The loyalty shown has grown to the point where people pray to their favorite company as if they were praying to their Maker. Then when you stick a bunch of people into any site or online forum, arguments rise. What is the point of any of this? Console wars may be fun for some. But people can certainly do better.

From any source of text, from history to religion, it is well known that pride itself can lead to one's downfall. That may soon happen to many gamers that decide to take part in this Console War. The pride people get when they support their console is that sense of superiority that makes themselves feel better, when in reality they are not. Don't get me wrong, each console has their pros and cons, as well as being homes to many fascinating games. But prancing around online saying that X console is better than Y console does not make it true, it just makes you feel better for yourself. And when that day comes where this imaginary glass wall shatters, what will you do next? Every console eventually has its bad days. Will you just hide in a cave and hibernate until problems go away?

This grows more to the point of affecting interactions with other gamers. That is the problem though, we are all gamers and we all love to play games. But this Console War and the concepts of superiority serves as a dark mist, blinding people of this. Just because a person plays on Z console does not make them any lesser than playing on the X console. So why treat that person different just because of what they like? What you like doesn't really apply to everyone. It just makes you appear as a jerk.

Then why do people have a need to act like this? It is not Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft will pay you for offering free advertisement for them. Does the personal benefits of pride and superiority really matter to a person? Apparently it does. But it doesn't need to as well. People have really put too much though and effort in this Console War, trying to antagonize anyone that is different. While some try so hard just to apply their views towards others, you have people actually playing and enjoying their consoles, without a care in the world. This should not be so hard to do, but people are trying so much focus in the wrong way.

We are not that far away from simple times in gaming. Yet, people have been pushing these times away. Apparently just enjoying your games is not enough anymore. In order to have more satisfaction, people have decided to take it upon themselves and antagonize anything different. History has shown many times that settling differences leads to simple peace. Why not allow that here? There is no peace or results to achieve in a Console War. Simply put, war is good for absolutely nothing!

That is what it is, a war. But how does one exactly win a war? Better yet, how does one take part in this war? This is just like major league sports, where the teams and athletes make their millions by winning, while the fans just cheer. It is not like any of us will get anything is one company makes more sales than others. And if you are not doing anything at all, how can you claim that you 'won' anything in the first place? The only thing you can possibly win are in the games that you actually playing. But instead, bragging rights are the imaginary rewards people fight for.

So that is it, the whole concept of this Console War is just for the benefit of the individuals. Apparently calling others Xbots, Sony Ponies, and Nintendrones make people feel good about themselves, and justifies why they choose the console they play in. But is this really necessary? As said earlier, we are all gamers. Our choices basically reflect on the kinds of games and features that we all like. And it is ok to be different, because that is what we are and it makes us human. Wouldn't it be best to be human than a walking advertisement?

Feel free to play what ever games you like. Get that console that has the extras you want. Be free to be what you want to be and play whatever you want to play. Sales charts are only numbers. Superiority and pride are meaningless. In the end, it is all about you and what you want to do with your free time.Don't let anyone else take that away from you.
